LeBron's Top Five Post-NBA Season
Only a baller like LeBron James can lose in his ninth appearance in the NBA finals and still have a Top Five List worthy enough to feature here!
5. LeBron opts out: LeBron James had until July 29, 2018 to pick up his $35.6 million dollar contract, or to decline it to become a free agent this offseason, and he, indeed did, opt out. This was a huge moment, as people inside LeBron’s inner circle believed that he could stay in Cleveland and play another year there. Once he announced his decision to opt out, the NBA free agency wheels started churning as teams prepared to offer LeBron whatever they could to claim his services.
4. LeBron goes Hollywood: HBO picked up LeBron’s Barbershop-Set Talk Show where multiple sports personalities and celebrities sit down with LeBron in a barbershop to have a 30 minute conversation surrounding politics, social issues, the latest sports and world news, and joke around. The first episode will air Tuesday, August 28, 2018 and OBJ, Snoop Dogg, Jon Stewart, Michael Bennett, Candace Sparks, Alvin Kamara, and Draymond Green will appear in this episode as well. People view LeBron not only as a highly respected sports figure, but he’s respected outside of sports as well which makes this show important, and allows athletes to express their opinions and to quote LeBron, to “never just shut up and dribble.”
3. LeBron becomes a coach: LeBron coached his son to two national titles in AAU basketball, one of which happened in a tournament in Las Vegas last week. I just happened to be there at the same time supporting my younger brother in his games. The town was on fire!
2. LeBron becomes a Laker: Magic Johnson, President of Basketball Operations for the Lakers, went to one of LeBron’s two LA homes two hours before free agency started at 12am ET, and held a meeting with LeBron. The meeting went well and while the content of the meeting was never leaked to the media or to the rest of us, clearly Magic’s vision of the future of the Lakers with LeBron on the team enticed LeBron so that he signed a four year $153.3 million deal.
1. LeBron Doesn’t Just Dribble; He Schools: LeBron opened up a high school for at-risk youth called I Promise, in Akron, Ohio, his hometown. Living in a major city like Chicago, I know the importance of having a school available for at-risk youth where the teachers and staff believe in them. So, I believe that this is a great accomplishment and I hope other ball players see the importance and offer similar opportunities in all cities.
